A pendulum is only useful as a divination tool if one knows how to put it to work effectively, and so that is the topic of discussion for today.
In the simplest of terms, using a pendulum involves holding the weightless end of its chain between the thumb and forefinger of one hand, stabilising the weight and then asking it a question to which the answer can either be YES or NO. The magickal practitioner then pays attention to the way in which the pendulum moves in response to the question, and interprets the direction of its movement as the answer to his question.

Many people like to draw a YES – NO chart to help them to more easily discern the answers provided by their pendulum. To do that, take a piece of paper and draw a large circle on it, then draw two lines – one vertical and one horizontal – to divide the circle into quarters. Mark each end of the vertical line with a YES and each end of the horizontal line with a NO. Here is an example of such a pendulum chart so that you can see exactly what is required:
Using Your Pendulum
Actually using your pendulum for divination purposes is incredibly easy. In fact, there are just a few simple steps which you need to follow:
Step One – Preparation
First, you should ensure that you have your pendulum and your pendulum chart with you. That done, go to a quiet place where you will not be disturbed, sit down and set your pendulum chart on a table or on the floor in front of you.
Next, take your pendulum in your dominant hand and hold the pendulum still so that it hovers about an inch or two above the centre of the pendulum chart, where the lines intersect.
Step Two – Ask a Question
Now you are ready to ask a question. The question can be anything, but should be asked in such a way that the answer can be YES or NO.
For example, if you are considering the purchase of an item which you believe may be of benefit to you, you could ask, ‘Would [the item] be of benefit to me?’ because this question can be answered either YES or NO. But you shouldn’t ask a question such as, ‘How can [this item] benefit me?’ because the answer can’t be given with a YES or NO response.
It is also important that you think about your question in a clear and focused manner when using the pendulum so that you aren’t holding conflicting thoughts. For example, if you were to ask a question about your job but you are also thinking about your relationship, the answer you get from the pendulum could apply to either.
This being the case, for best results, you should ask one question at a time and think only about that question until you have obtained an answer.
Step Three – Obtain The Answer
Once you have asked your question, concentrate on the weight of the pendulum. Do not make any attempt to move it physically, but simply observe it. After a few seconds it will begin to sway in one direction or the other. This swaying will usually become more prominent and before long the pendulum will either be swinging clearly from NO to NO on your pendulum chart, or from YES to YES.
Obviously if the pendulum swings from NO to NO then the answer to your question is NO. If it swings from YES to YES then the answer to your question is YES.
On some occasions the pendulum will refuse to swing or it will go round in circles. This means that your question cannot be answered at this time. Either re-phrase the question, try again later, or ask another question on a different subject.
The more you practice with your pendulum, the better the results will be. However, you can’t expect the answers you get to be one hundred per cent accurate from day one. The pendulum is simply a tool which enables you to ‘tune in’ to current energy patterns and relay any resulting information through your physical nervous system and to the pendulum itself.
As with any tool, the more you practice using it, the better the end results will be.
